EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
